📅 Start dateSet your dates and the book turns to the right day

Three days in Chengdu, built around a single geographic cluster: the panda base sits north of the city, while People's Park, Kuanzhai Alley, Wenshu Monastery and Jinli all sit inside the Second Ring Road — so you spend your time walking, not commuting. Day 1 goes north early for pandas, then back into the center for tea and people-watching. Day 2 stays entirely in the old-city core on foot. Day 3 drifts east to the industrial-art district and the river park before a last loop through Taikoo Li.

Chengdu's character is slow on purpose. Teahouses outnumber museums, hotpot is a social event rather than a meal, and the city's default speed is a bamboo chair and a covered cup of jasmine tea. Plan fewer stops than you think you need — the point of Chengdu is the sitting-down part.

Three things to lock down before you fly: (1) Panda base tickets are date-and-time-slot based and sell out on weekends and holidays — book the moment your dates are fixed. (2) Most museums and the panda base require passport-number registration at booking; carry your physical passport every day, it is your ticket. (3) If your dates land on Chinese public holidays (Spring Festival, Labour Day around May 1, National Day Oct 1–7) or the summer school-break window, expect the panda base and Kuanzhai Alley to be at capacity — book earlier and go earlier.

Before you go

  • Confirm visa-free eligibility: many nationalities currently enter China visa-free for up to 30 days on a unilateral basis, and a 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit applies to eligible nationalities arriving at Chengdu Tianfu or Shuangliu with an onward ticket to a third country — verify your own passport against the current list before booking.
  • Set up Alipay and/or WeChat Pay and link a foreign credit card before departure; both accept international cards for most payments, and QR payment is the default everywhere in Chengdu.
  • Every booking — train, hotel, panda base, museum — needs your passport name and number exactly as printed. Keep a photo of the passport page offline.
  • Download offline maps and save your hotel's name and address in Chinese characters on your phone; taxi drivers and locals may not read English.

Packing notes

Comfortable walking shoes (old-city lanes are uneven stone), a light rain shell — Chengdu is humid and drizzly year-round — sun hat and sunscreen for the panda base morning, a small power bank (you will scan QR codes all day), tissues (many public restrooms do not supply them), and a refillable bottle. In winter add a warm layer: the city is damp-cold, not dry-cold.

GETTING AROUND

Routes & transport

Getting to Chengdu

Fly into Chengdu Tianfu International (TFU) or Shuangliu (CTU), or arrive by high-speed rail from Chongqing (roughly 1–1.5 hours【estimate】), Xi'an (roughly 3–4 hours【estimate】) or Leshan. From Tianfu Airport, metro Line 18 runs to the city center in about 40–50 minutes【estimate】; a taxi or ride-hail to a central hotel is roughly 60–90 minutes【estimate】 depending on traffic. From Shuangliu, metro Line 10 connects to the center in about 30–40 minutes【estimate】.

Getting around the city

The metro is fast, cheap and bilingual — fares are distance-based, roughly 2–7 yuan per ride【estimate】. Use Alipay or WeChat Pay to scan the QR gate, or buy a single-journey ticket from the machine with cash or card. For short hops in the old city, walking beats everything. Ride-hailing (DiDi inside Alipay) is cheap and easy; have your destination written in Chinese. Taxis are metered and start around 9–10 yuan【estimate】.

DAY 1

Pandas & People's Park

◉ today
HotelChengdu Research Base of Giant Panda BreedingChunxi RoadPeople's ParkHeming TeahouseHotel
Today's route · Red = walk/taxi · Blue = metro/bus · Gold = night · schematic, not to scale
🧭
Today at a glance: Morning = Giant Panda Base (go early, pandas are active before ~10:00【estimate】); Afternoon = Chunxi Road for lunch and a stroll; Evening = People's Park + Heming Teahouse for tea and people-watching.
07:00–07:30【estimate】
Leave hotel and head to Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Take a taxi or DiDi; aim to arrive before opening (around 07:30–08:00【estimate】) to beat crowds. Bring your passport — it is required for ticket pickup and many bookings.
08:00–11:30【estimate】
Explore the Panda Base: follow the main loop to the nursery, adult enclosures, and red panda area. Keep quiet and don’t use flash. If you want a sit-down breakfast afterward, grab a simple noodle bowl near the exit; otherwise, plan lunch on Chunxi Road.
12:30–14:30【estimate】
Lunch around Chunxi Road: try Long Chao Shou (Chunxi Road branch) for Sichuan wontons and dan dan noodles. After eating, wander the pedestrian streets and department stores. Payment tip: set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your foreign card before the trip; many stalls are cashless.
15:30–18:00【estimate】
People’s Park: walk the bamboo-lined paths, see the matchmaking corner, and relax by the lake. Then head to Heming Teahouse for jasmine tea and a classic bamboo-chair experience. Expect around ¥30–¥80 per person for tea and snacks【estimate】.
18:30–20:30【estimate】
Dinner near People’s Park or back toward Chunxi Road: try Chen Mapo Tofu (Wenshu/Chunxi area branch) for mapo tofu and twice-cooked pork. If you want something lighter, pick a nearby noodle shop. Return to hotel by taxi or metro.
🛟
Plan B: If the Panda Base is sold out or you oversleep, swap in Chengdu Zoo (pandas on site) or the Sichuan Museum, then keep the afternoon/evening plan unchanged. Book Panda Base tickets in advance with your passport; entry is often timed.
💡
Cold fact: Giant pandas eat bamboo for up to 14 hours a day【estimate】, which is why mornings are the best viewing window — they nap heavily after feeding.
DAY 2

Ancient Alleys & Hotpot

◉ today
HotelWenshu MonasteryKuanzhai AlleyShufeng Yayun TeahouseShu Feng Yuan HotpotJinli Ancient StreetHotel
Today's route · Red = walk/taxi · Blue = metro/bus · Gold = night · schematic, not to scale
🧭
Today at a glance: Morning = Wenshu Monastery and vegetarian breakfast; Afternoon = Kuanzhai Alley + Shufeng Yayun Teahouse; Evening = hotpot at Shu Feng Yuan, then Jinli Ancient Street for lanterns.
08:30–10:30【estimate】
Visit Wenshu Monastery. Walk the temple grounds, then have a vegetarian breakfast or early lunch at the monastery’s vegetarian restaurant. Try mushroom noodles, mock-meat dishes, and tea. Budget around ¥30–¥60 per person【estimate】.
11:00–13:30【estimate】
Kuanzhai Alley (Wide and Narrow Alleys): browse courtyard shops, snack stalls, and teahouses. Lunch option: Kuanzhai Alley snack row for dan dan noodles, rabbit head (if adventurous), and san da pao (rice balls in tea). Keep an eye on spice levels.
14:00–16:00【estimate】
Shufeng Yayun Teahouse: enjoy a Sichuan opera face-changing show with tea. Shows usually run in the afternoon and evening; book ahead with your passport. Tickets often range from ¥150–¥320 depending on seating【estimate】.
17:30–19:30【estimate】
Dinner at Shu Feng Yuan Hotpot (or a similar well-known hotpot branch). Order a split pot if you want mild; must-tries: tripe, beef slices, shrimp paste, potato slices, and oil-dish dipping sauce. Expect ¥100–¥180 per person【estimate】.
20:00–21:30【estimate】
Jinli Ancient Street: evening lanterns, snack stalls, and souvenir shops. Try tang you ba ba (glutinous rice balls) or san da pao. It’s touristy but photogenic. Return to hotel by taxi/DiDi.
🛟
Plan B: If opera tickets are sold out, replace with a Sichuan opera片段 at a smaller teahouse or a night walk along the Jin River. If hotpot queues are long, switch to a nearby chuanchuan (skewer) shop — usually faster seating.
💡
Cold fact: Sichuan opera face-changing (bian lian) is a closely guarded stage art; performers change masks in fractions of a second【estimate】, and the technique is rarely taught outside the troupe.
DAY 3

Art, Tea & Departure

◉ today
HotelEastern Suburb MemoryWangjiang Tower ParkTaikoo LiHotel
Today's route · Red = walk/taxi · Blue = metro/bus · Gold = night · schematic, not to scale
🧭
Today at a glance: Morning = Eastern Suburb Memory (art & industrial vibes); Afternoon = Wangjiang Tower Park + Taikoo Li; Evening = relaxed dinner and departure prep.
09:00–11:30【estimate】
Eastern Suburb Memory: former factory turned art district. Visit galleries, design shops, and photo spots. Coffee stop: a local café inside the complex. Great for a solo traveler who wants a slower morning.
12:00–13:30【estimate】
Lunch near Eastern Suburb Memory or on the way to Wangjiang Tower Park. Try a simple Sichuan restaurant for kung pao chicken and stir-fried greens. Budget ¥40–¥80 per person【estimate】.
14:00–16:00【estimate】
Wangjiang Tower Park: bamboo groves, river views, and the historic tower. It’s calm and good for a solo walk. Tea in the park is optional; a cup is often ¥20–¥50【estimate】.
16:30–19:00【estimate】
Taikoo Li (Chunxi area): modern open-air shopping district. Browse stores, grab a bubble tea or dessert, and people-watch. Dinner option: Din Tai Fung (Taikoo Li branch) for xiaolongbao, or a local Sichuan spot nearby. Expect ¥80–¥150 per person【estimate】.
19:30–21:00【estimate】
Return to hotel, pack, and confirm your airport/rail transfer. If you have an early departure, pre-book a taxi or check the metro’s first train time. Keep your passport and booking confirmations handy.
🛟
Plan B: If it rains, swap Wangjiang Tower Park for the Sichuan Museum or Chengdu Museum (indoor, passport required). If you’re short on time, skip Taikoo Li and head straight to the airport/station.
💡
Cold fact: Chengdu is one of China’s “slow cities” — teahouse culture here dates back centuries, and locals often spend entire afternoons over a single cup【estimate】.
OPTIONAL

Optional extras

Alternative morning: Sichuan Museum or Chengdu Museum — good rain plan, free or low-cost, passport required. Great for history and bronze/ceramics exhibits.

Alternative afternoon: Qingcheng Mountain or Dujiangyan day trip — only if you have a full extra day; too rushed for a 3-day trip otherwise.

Alternative evening: Jiuyanqiao Bar Street or Lan Kwai Fong Chengdu for nightlife; or a Sichuan opera show at a smaller venue for a more intimate experience.

Solo-friendly add-on: A cooking class (mapo tofu or dumplings) — usually 2–3 hours, ¥200–¥400【estimate】, book with passport details.

GOOD TO KNOW

Tips & pitfalls

Visa-free entry: Many nationalities can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days under unilateral schemes, or use 240-hour transit visa-free if eligible. Rules change — verify your passport nationality and current policy before booking flights.

Payments: Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your foreign card before arrival. Link your card, complete identity verification, and test a small payment. Some small vendors still prefer cash, so carry ¥100–¥300【estimate】 in small notes.

Passport everywhere: Your passport is required for hotel check-in, train/flight tickets, Panda Base tickets, and many attractions. Carry it or a clear photo, but keep the original secure.

Offline survival: Download offline maps (Google Maps may not work well; try Amap/Gaode or Apple Maps) and save your hotel name and address in Chinese. Show the Chinese address to taxi drivers.

Metro & taxi: Chengdu metro is cheap and easy; single rides often ¥2–¥7【estimate】. DiDi works with international cards in many cases, but have a backup taxi-hailing method. Avoid rush hour 08:00–09:30 and 17:30–19:00【estimate】.

Spice control: Say “微辣” (wēi là) for mild, “不要辣” (bù yào là) for no chili. Hotpot oil can be heavy; ask for a split pot or clear broth if sensitive.

Teahouse etiquette: At Heming Teahouse, you pay for tea and can refill hot water for hours. Keep your cup lid slightly open to signal a refill; closing it often means you’re done.

Connectivity: A local eSIM or roaming plan helps, but many Western apps are blocked. Download a VPN before arrival if you need them, and save offline translations.

WHERE TO SLEEP

Where to stay

AreaReference price【estimate】Why
Chunxi Road / Taikoo LiMid-range hotel roughly 350–700 yuan per night【estimate】Central, metro Line 2 and 3 interchange, walkable to People's Park and the old city; best for a solo traveler who wants everything on foot
Kuanzhai Alley / Wenshu areaBoutique guesthouse roughly 300–600 yuan per night【estimate】Quieter, courtyard-style stays, close to Day 2's whole route; fewer late-night food options than Chunxi
South / Jinli sideRoughly 250–500 yuan per night【estimate】Near Wuhou Shrine and Jinli, good for evening strolls; slightly farther from the panda base and the east-side art district

Route logic, three booking questions, and a light-sleeper note

Route logic: staying in the Chunxi Road / Taikoo Li cluster puts Day 1's return leg, all of Day 2 and Day 3's final loop within walking or one-metro-stop distance. Only the panda base (Day 1 morning) and Eastern Suburb Memory (Day 3 morning) require a real ride.

Three questions to ask when booking: (1) Does the hotel accept foreign passports and register foreign guests? (2) Is the metro station within a 10-minute walk, and which line? (3) Can they confirm the address in Chinese characters for your taxi driver?

Light-sleeper note: streets around Chunxi Road and Kuanzhai Alley stay lively past midnight — ask for a room away from the street side, or choose the Wenshu / Kuanzhai courtyard cluster for a quieter night.

IF THINGS GO WRONG

If things go wrong

Heavy rain

Swap outdoor plans for Sichuan Museum, Chengdu Museum, or a teahouse. Metro is rain-friendly. Keep a compact umbrella; taxis get scarce in downpours.

Bookings sold out

Panda Base and Sichuan opera can sell out. Book 1–3 days ahead with passport. Backup: Chengdu Zoo, smaller teahouse shows, or a cooking class.

Missed train/flight

Go to the station service desk with your passport and booking. Same-day rebooking may be possible but not guaranteed. For flights, use the airline app; for trains, try 12306 or the ticket office.

Stomach trouble or lost passport

For stomach issues, switch to plain rice porridge, noodles, and bottled water; pharmacies (药店) are common. If passport is lost, contact your embassy/consulate and local police for a report; keep a photo copy and digital scan.
