Kyoto 3-Day Route
Quick draft · 0/118 facts checked
Good to follow: where to go each day, in what order, what's free.
Verify before you go: all prices, hours, booking rules (marked estimates).

📅 Start dateSet your dates and the book turns to the right day

Kyoto in 3 days: a compact east-to-west loop that strings together Higashiyama's temple lanes and Gion's evening glow (D1), Arashiyama's bamboo grove and Zen gardens (D2), then Fushimi Inari's torii tunnels and a downtown food crawl (D3). All three days sit inside one city, so you sleep in a single hotel and let buses, trains, and your own two feet do the rest.

Kyoto's character is quiet and layered: wooden machiya townhouses, moss gardens, incense shops, and a food culture that runs from 400-year-old tofu houses to standing noodle bars. It rewards early starts and slow evenings. Expect crowds at the headline sights by 10:00, and near-silence on the same lanes before 08:00.

Three things to lock down before you fly: (1) Kiyomizu-dera and some sub-temples may require timed online reservations in peak seasons — check the official site 1–2 months out【estimate】. (2) Arashiyama's Sagano Romantic Train and Hozugawa boat rides sell out days ahead in spring/autumn — book as soon as your dates open【estimate】. (3) If your trip lands on Golden Week (late Apr–early May), Obon (mid-Aug), or New Year, expect shrine crowds, higher hotel rates, and some shops closed — book lodging 2–3 months ahead【estimate】.

Before you go — countdown

  • Check visa / e-visa eligibility for your passport and confirm entry rules on Japan's official MOFA or embassy site【estimate】
  • Reserve any timed-entry temple or train tickets that open for your dates【estimate】
  • Book hotel in your chosen area (see Stay block) — prices rise sharply on weekends and holidays【estimate】
  • Set up payment: a no-foreign-fee card plus some cash yen, and decide on your data plan (see Drive block)【estimate】

Packing card

  • Comfortable walking shoes — 15,000+ steps/day is normal here
  • Small daypack + refillable bottle (vending machines and refill points are everywhere)
  • Coin purse — many small temples and buses still prefer coins or IC card
  • Portable charger and a Type A plug adapter (Japan runs 100V)
  • Light rain shell and a compact umbrella — showers are common spring and autumn
  • Slip-on socks: you'll remove shoes at several temples and some restaurants

DAY 1

Day 1: Higashiyama Temples & Gion Evening

Today's route · Red = walk/taxi · Blue = metro/bus · Gold = night · schematic, not to scale
🧭
Today at a glance: Morning = Kiyomizu-dera & the preserved slopes; Afternoon = Sannenzaka/Ninenzaka down to Yasaka Shrine; Evening = Gion & Hanamikoji lantern-lit stroll.
07:30
Start early at Kiyomizu-dera (opens 06:00【estimate】). Entry ¥500【estimate】. The terrace and Otowa waterfall are quietest before 09:00. Wear grippy shoes — stone steps get slick.
10:00
Walk down Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka. Sample yudofu, matcha soft-serve (¥400【estimate】) and pick up a kyo-yaki cup. No eating while walking on these lanes — stand by the shop.
12:30
Lunch near Ninenzaka at Hisago (oyako-don / nabeyaki udon), set around ¥1,300【estimate】. Cash-friendly but cards usually accepted.
14:00
Yasaka Shrine (free) then into Gion. Maruyama Park is a good rest stop. Keep voices low in residential lanes.
18:30
Dinner in Gion at Gion Karyo (kaiseki-style, ¥6,000–9,000【estimate】) or a cheaper Gion Tanto okonomiyaki (¥1,500【estimate】). Then walk Hanamikoji Street — do not photograph geiko/maiko without permission; some lanes ban photography (fines apply).
🛟
Plan B: If Higashiyama is packed, swap to Nanzen-ji + Philosopher's Path (quieter, same vibe) and return to Gion after 19:00.
💡
Cold fact: Kiyomizu's main hall is built without a single nail, using a wooden interlocking joint system (kake-zukuri).

12:00
Lunch at Shoraian (tofu kaiseki, ¥4,000+【estimate】, reserve ahead) or casual Arashiyama Yoshimura soba with bridge views (¥1,500【estimate】).
14:00
Togetsukyo Bridge photo stop, then Iwatayama Monkey Park: ¥600【estimate】 entry, 15–20 min uphill walk【estimate】. Hold food tight — monkeys grab.
17:30
Return via Arashiyama Station (Randen tram, ¥250【estimate】). Dinner back in central Kyoto at Nishiki Warai (okonomiyaki, ¥1,200【estimate】) or Honke Owariya soba (¥1,800【estimate】).
🛟
Plan B: Rain? Skip the grove and do Kyoto Railway Museum (¥1,200【estimate】) plus Arashiyama Yugetsu onsen soak (¥1,300【estimate】).
💡
Cold fact: The bamboo here is moso bamboo, which can grow up to 1 meter per day in peak season.

💡
Cold fact: Fushimi Inari has roughly 10,000 torii gates, each donated and inscribed with the donor's name.

GOOD TO KNOW

Tips & pitfalls

Buses run late: Kyoto city buses can be 10–20 min behind schedule【estimate】 in peak season. Build buffer or use the subway/JR instead.

IC card first: Get an ICOCA/Suica at Kyoto Station (¥2,000【estimate】 with ¥1,500【estimate】 usable). Works on buses, subway, konbini.

Temple closing times: Most temples close 16:30–17:00【estimate】. Plan the big ones in the morning.

Trash: Public bins are rare. Carry a small bag; konbini bins are for store purchases.

Etiquette: No eating while walking in Gion/Higashiyama; queue on the left on escalators in Kyoto (Kansai style).

Reservations: Popular kaiseki and Pontocho spots fill 1–2 weeks out【estimate】. Solo diners often get bar seats same-day.

Heat & humidity: July–August is brutal. Carry water, use a hand fan, and schedule indoor breaks 13:00–15:00.

Cash backup: Keep ¥5,000–10,000【estimate】 in cash for small shrines, markets, and rural buses.

WHERE TO SLEEP

Where to stay

AreaReference priceWhy
Kyoto Station area~¥8,000–15,000/night for a solo room【estimate】Best transport hub: JR, subway, buses, and airport express all converge. Easy luggage handling and early starts.
Downtown (Shijo–Karasuma / Kawaramachi)~¥10,000–20,000/night【estimate】Walkable to Nishiki Market, Pontocho, and Gion. Best for food and evening atmosphere; slightly pricier.
Higashiyama (Gion / Kiyomizu side)~¥12,000–25,000/night【estimate】Atmospheric lanes and temple views, but fewer transit options and more uphill walking. Good for a splurge ryokan night.

Route logic, booking questions, and sleep notes

Route logic: Staying near Kyoto Station or downtown keeps all three days reachable in 15–30 minutes【estimate】. Higashiyama is lovely but adds transit time to Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari.

Three booking questions: (1) Is the room price per person or per room, and does it include tax and any lodging tax? (2) What is the cancellation window, and is there a no-show fee? (3) Is there a curfew or self-check-in, and how do you reach the front desk after hours?

Light-sleeper note: Rooms facing main streets or above bars can be noisy; request a higher floor or a back-facing room. Traditional machiya and ryokan often have thin walls — bring earplugs.

Hidden cost: luggage storage / coin lockers~¥400–800/day【estimate】Useful on arrival and departure days
Hidden cost: ATM / card foreign fees~1–3% of spend【estimate】Check your bank; use a no-foreign-fee card where possible

Currency: prices above are in Japanese yen (JPY). For a rough RMB figure, use the current rate — at about ¥1 JPY ≈ ¥0.05 CNY, ¥50,000 is roughly ¥2,500 CNY【estimate】. For live rates, check your bank's app or XE.com. All prices are shown as tax-inclusive where the venue charges tax; confirm at payment.

Payment and cash: cards are widely accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, and chain shops, but many small temples, market stalls, and older eateries are cash-only. Carry ¥10,000–20,000 in cash for a 3-day trip【estimate】, and use 7-Eleven or Japan Post ATMs for withdrawals. Visa and passport: check whether your nationality needs a visa or e-visa for Japan, and confirm current entry rules on Japan's official MOFA website or your nearest Japanese embassy — requirements vary by passport and change over time【estimate】.

IF THINGS GO WRONG

If things go wrong

Heavy rain / typhoon

Check JMA warnings. Swap outdoor temples for covered arcades (Teramachi, Nishiki), museums, or a sento. Trains may suspend — do not force travel.

Restaurant fully booked

Walk one block off the main lane; side-street izakaya usually have seats. Or use a konbini meal + depachika (department store basement) — excellent quality, ¥800–1,500【estimate】.

Missed last train/bus

Kyoto's last buses run around 22:30–23:00【estimate】. If stranded, use a taxi (start ¥600【estimate】) or a 24h manga café / capsule hotel (¥3,000–4,500【estimate】).

Stomach trouble or lost passport

Pharmacies (Matsumoto Kiyoshi) stock Seirogan. For passport loss: file a police report, then contact your embassy in Osaka/Tokyo. Keep a photo of your passport and a digital copy.
